Man with back pain

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What exactly is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions caused by mechanical dysfunction of joints and muscles. In plain English, that means finding out what’s wrong, manipulating and mobilising joints and muscles, to relieve pain and restore mobility; and recommending stretches and exercises to maximise your chances of remaining fit. In many cases, we have to identify the one small action that may be causing pain.

2. Will you be able to explain what’s wrong with me?

Yes – and, if necessary, we’ll show you models and pictures to make things clear.  If you need further investigation we will refer you to the appropriate healthcare professional.

3. Does it hurt?

Patients are told that there may be some short-term discomfort – most patients find their treatment a pleasant experience – something to look forward to.

4. But is even mild discomfort worth it?

Definitely. If you weren’t already uncomfortable, you wouldn’t be a patient? Chiropractic is about relieving your pain.

5. Can anyone be a chiropractor?

No. The title of chiropractor is protected by law. Only practitioners who are registered by the GCC (General Chiropractic Council) can use the title.

6. Is chiropractic a genuine health-care profession?

Yes. Chiropractic is a 4-year full-time degree level qualification, studying anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, radiology, neurology, diagnosis, pathology and the hands-on practicalities of orthopaedic examination and chiropractic technique, to qualify as a chiropractor. All chiropractors have to maintain post-graduate studies in order to re-register on an annual basis.

Top Tips

With all the stormy weather, there hasn’t been much opportunity to tidy the garden for the winter. However, most of the leaves are now down and the lawn will suffer if not cleared.

If you have had problems in the past with low back pain, please take precautions before going out there to do the job.
