Your Questions Answered

10. Do chiropractors have to
go on training?

Post-graduate study is encouraged – and forthcoming regulations will demand continuing professional development as a condition for re-registration.

11. Do doctors approve of chiropractic?

The majority of general practitioners see chiropractic as a valuable complementary science. Many of our patients are referred by their doctors.

12. Do I have to be referred
by a doctor?

No. Chiropractors are Primary Health-Care Professionals, like Dentists and Opticians.

13. I’ve heard about neck ‘adjustment’. It sounds pretty drastic.

Not in the slightest. About 70% of consultations entail adjustment, which leaves your neck feeling pleasantly relaxed.

14. Do you treat headaches?

Yes – we treat most types of headaches, including migraines and ‘cluster’ headaches.

15. I’ve just had a hip replaced. Can you still treat my lower back?

Yes – your new hip will not be put at risk by this treatment.

16. Can you treat me after
other operations?

Usually – though, obviously, this depends upon the individual circumstances.

17. Do you do X-rays?

No. If the circumstances suggest that the benefits outweigh the risk, we will arrange an X-ray to be performed in a suitable medical institution.

18. How long will my treatment take to work?

How long have you been in pain? The sooner you come to us, the faster you’ll recover and vice versa. At your first visit, we should be able to give you a pretty good idea of the expected recovery time.

19. How long does each
treatment take?

The first treatment – at which we check your medical history etc. – takes about 40 minutes. Subsequent treatments are much quicker – usually 15 – 20 minutes.

20. Why can’t I just take painkillers?

Although analgesics may be helpful in controlling short-term pain, they can never address the causes. This is where chiropractic comes into its own.

21. I’ve got osteoarthritis, which hurts when I walk. Can you help?

Probably. Degenerated joints are sometimes caused by malfunction in surrounding joints. By restoring this function, thereby spreading the load, a chiropractor can bring relief to the affected joints.
